doves, Melbourne - August 2011

I took these photos over three days in August 2011 on a Nikon D90 camera. August is the height of winter here in south-eastern Australia, though the first few days of the month were unseasonably warm.

I dislike our garden. It brings little joy to me. It is messy, overrun with weeds and allergenic pollens, and feels claustrophobic and restricted. The suburbs and I still exist in a tense relationship, six years since I moved from the rural region that was home for the first two decades of my life.

However, I sometimes find something worth looking at in the mess and even disappointment of it all: the intricately detailed spider webs, the way the bare tree branches frame the cloudy skies, the birds that visit during the day, the regular aeroplanes that fly directly over our house.

The doves shown here are, I think, of the genus Geopelia, probably peaceful doves (Geopelia placida).

Lovely photos! How nice that you can still find something of beauty in a dull, suburban backyard. The spider and doves are cute. πŸ™‚
