NaPoWriMo + ReWild

April 2014 is shaping up as a month of personal challenges: namely, Napowrimo* (National Poetry Writing Month) and the We Are Wildness Rewild Challenge** (30 minutes a day for 30 days of deliberate, purposeful outdoor time). So far, so good.

Rewild comes with daily prompts, if you sign up for their emails. Today’s task was to spend time with a tree. I was rewarded for my efforts with getting close to a flock of crimson rosellas. (See the above photo – if you notice the flash of red feathers amongst the leaves, that’s a rosella!)

Poem 20 of 30

The winter air has arrived before its time,

travelling north from icy Antarctic wastelands.

The wind is cold and seeps into the marrow

until the heartbeat slows and the mind turns inward,

falling into itself in a prison made of frozen bone pillars.

There is nothing left but

to watch the blue skies peer between the storm clouds.

[In case it’s not immediately obvious, this was written at the culmination of a very chilly autumn day in the southern part of mainland Australia. It can get very cold here!]

Nature, Sunlight, Butterflies – March 2013

Photos taken on an iPhone 3GS in South Gippsland, Victoria, Australia.

March 10, 2013.

The butterfly was unexpectedly relaxed as I approached it, and it sat for as long as I needed to take a photo of it. It’s the small joys in life!
